Why Do You Do Pilates?

"Find your Why and you will find your Way." - John C. Maxwell

Why Do You Do Pilates?

I love asking our Pilates community this question: Why do you take Pilates? To me, this “why” is like your North Star—the reason you get up, head out, and show up to the studio. It’s what sparks that first Pilates class and keeps you coming back, even when life gets messy or motivation feels low.

I can say that my own reasons for practicing Pilates have definitely evolved. Six years ago, I was just trying to avoid back pain and have enough strength to hold my newborn without worrying about straining myself. Now? It’s about keeping up with my life and staying strong enough to run around with my six-year-old without feeling like my body’s giving up on me.

And honestly, these days, the biggest reason I do Pilates is simply to feel good in my body and make space for daily self-care. Pilates gives me that foundation.

When I was in my twenties, I’ll admit, it was mostly about looking good. Now, it’s about feeling good and being capable—making everyday life feel lighter and smoother, for my body and my mind.

Over the years, I’ve had so many conversations with clients about their “why.” Recently, I asked our Pilates community to share their reasons, and here’s what they had to say. Maybe a few of these will resonate with you:

  • To manage stress

  • For my kids

  • To improve my flexibility

  • For my mental health

  • To get stronger

  • To relieve lower back pain

  • To improve my golf game

  • To pick up my children without getting hurt

  • To age gracefully

  • To build core strength

  • To prepare for starting a family

  • To bend over and tie my shoes or get out of the car with ease

Whatever your “why” is, it’s your anchor, and it’s okay if it shifts with time. That’s part of the journey. I’d love to hear your “why”—it’s the stories and reasons from each of you that keep me inspired and passionate about what I do. I’m truly grateful to be on this path with you, working toward better health and wellness together.

Courtney
